1 Kottbusser Tor

Nicknamed “Kotti” by locals, this area is a lesson in contrasts. The giant, semicircular apartment building—subsidized housing wrapping around the northern part of the square—defines a public space that corrals a lot of street life. With the U-Bahn station in the center, an elevated train line overhead, a busy arterial running through its heart, and a half-dozen smaller roads all converging on this circle, it’s always full of activity.

As Berlin boomed with the Industrial Age in the late 19th century, Kreuzberg expanded like crazy to house workers (much like Prenzlauer Berg, to the north). During the Cold War, Kreuzberg was in the West but surrounded on three sides by the Wall. Its buildings, already damaged by WWII bombs, became further dilapidated as property owners—fishing for government support—refused to invest in repairs.
